Kiyuni Fruit and Vegetable Growing
for Sustainable Livelihoods
This is an 18-month pilot project which is being implemented in Kiyuni parish, Gayaza sub-county in Kiboga district. The project aims to empower farmers to engage in market-oriented production of fruits and vegetables in order to improve food security, nutrition and household incomes. SLINT-Uganda will empower the farmers through training and advice on appropriate agricultural practices and technologies, provision of agricultural improved seeds and other agricultural inputs, facilitation of access to relevant market information and catalysing the establishment of farmers’ groups. To date, an initial group of 50 farmers has received and planted watermelon seeds and the first training workshop has was organised in May 2009. The farmers have also expressed interest in growing green paper and cabbage. SLINT-Uganda will assist them to access seeds for those crops during the next planting season.
